How long does MRSA live on surfaces?
Days to weeks on ordinary dry surfaces, and longer on some fabrics and plastics. But surviving is not the same as infecting — MRSA still needs a route into broken skin, and routine cleaning removes it.

The short answer
MRSA is a hardy bacterium on dry surfaces. Systematic reviews of hospital pathogens put Staphylococcus aureus survival at anywhere from about seven days to seven months, depending on the material, temperature, humidity and how much organic matter surrounds it. In a home, a working assumption of a few days to a couple of weeks is sensible — and everyday disinfectants remove it in minutes.

Laboratory survival times are deliberately favourable to the bacteria — heavy inoculum, undisturbed surface, no cleaning. Real rooms are cleaned, touched and ventilated, so practical persistence is shorter.
Surviving is not the same as infecting
A contaminated surface only matters if the bacteria reach a way in. MRSA on a door handle does not infect the person who touches it with intact skin; it travels on their hands until those hands touch a cut, a graze, a shaved area, a dressing, a drip site or the nostrils. That chain — surface, hand, broken skin — is why hand hygiene stops far more infections than intensive cleaning does.
The same logic explains why MRSA is not treated as an airborne infection even though it can be detected in room air.
What kills MRSA on surfaces
- Dilute bleach — about 1 part household bleach to 10 parts water, made up fresh. Leave wet for the label's contact time. Never mix with ammonia or other cleaners.
- 70% alcohol — wipes or spray. Fast and effective on clean, non-porous surfaces; poor on visibly dirty ones.
- Quaternary ammonium wipes — the standard supermarket antibacterial wipe. Fine for daily high-touch cleaning.
- Hot laundry plus tumble drying — the most reliable way to clear fabrics. Detergent and full drying both contribute.
- Soap and water on hands — twenty seconds, especially after wound care. Alcohol gel at 60%+ where a sink is not available.
A realistic household cleaning routine
While someone in the house has an active infection, aim for consistency over intensity:
- Wipe high-touch points daily — door handles, taps, light switches, phone, remote control, keyboard, toilet flush.
- Keep the wound covered with a clean dry dressing and bag old dressings straight away.
- Wash the infected person's towels, bedding and clothing on the hottest cycle the fabric allows, and dry fully.
- Do not share towels, flannels, razors, bar soap, deodorant sticks or clothing.
- Damp-dust rather than dry-sweep, which lifts skin flakes into the air and onto other surfaces.
